A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
