Approximately fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then located multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state early analysis indicate the substance was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the case" and have requested to the residents for information.

A high-ranking official said the vandalism left him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
